Stephen , via Susan Smith MUGGERIDGE HISTORY OF HEAVY HORSES\Taungatara Stud, Taranaki\ "My great grandfather, Job Muggeridge (pronounced Jobe), was born in England, in 1832. He was a teamster and earned his living making deliveries in the Sussex area, during the late 1880ís. He died in 1916, aged 84. His photo shows his true character.\\ "His son, my grandfather, Wallace Muggeridge, also a great horseman, was born in England, 1873. He came to New Zealand in the early 190ís with his wife and 3 children. He and the family resided on Rama Road in the Manaia area.\\ "My late father, Lou Muggeridge, often told me the storied of his father and grandfather, in England. Lou was the 4th and last child, and was the only one born in New Zealand, at Manaia in Taranaki, in 1917. He attended Auroa School, to which he rode a pony a distance of about 5 miles.\\ "As he got older, he helped my grandfather, by taking milk to the factory with the horses and wagon, as well as all the farm work. This being agriculture work for the summer and winter crops, putting the hay in, (stacks of loose hay in those days), harrowing, fertilizing and feeding out in the winter. The horse were very fit as they were worked every day back then. The time came when my father was old enough to leave home, he met and married my mum Elsie in 1942.\\ "They leased a farm in the Okaiawa area in Taranaki, which was still fairly close to the home farm. They shifter to many different farming opportunities in Taranaki, finally settling at Te Kiri, a little settlement inland from Opunake, on the west coast, 1 hour south of New Plymouth. They were given some horses from the home farm, brought some in and bred a few to keep numbers at a premium.\\ "There was always plenty of work for them; father use to do contracting for extra money, mowing hay and ploughing. He told me he got 2-10/-per week for ploughing and for that he also picked up the stones and dumped them in the nearest river. Hard work! I never knew what the pay was for mowing, but he used to take 2 pairs of horses; he would drive one pair and lead the others behind. Every time he changed a knife, he changed the horses. The spelled pair were watered and then had their nose bags put on, filled with oaten chaff.\\ "My mum was hard worker too, she also helped with the horses and as a boy of 6 years old, I saw her with a pair of horses mowing hay and helping father. They always milked cows, had pigs and lots of fowls. Busy times for them bother, as they had 9 children; Iím Stephen and I am second to youngest. As life went on I got very fond of the horses and enjoyed working with them.\\ "Father did a great deal of parades, galas and centennial celebrations with his horses over the years. At one time in the 60ís and 70ís he had a 5 horse team of grey heavy horses; I suspect they had Percheron in their breeding. He had brought most of them in and once they died out he couldnít retain the team. He enjoyed taking them out in public; they looked quite impressive.\\ "In 1969, he brought a colt, Donnybrook Monarch (4608 Vol. 30) that Fergus OíConnor in Nelson had bread. There were very few registered mares around at the time, so we never registered any horses bred by that colt. But never the less, still bread some good work horses and thatís all father cared about. He worked horseís right up till a few months before he died suddenly on the 11th July 1985, in his 68th year, only months after he had mown hay with me, during January and February, and enjoyed doing it. He knew that I would carry on with the horses and it made him happy.\\ "Gilbert Cooper leased to me, a registered mare Rockwood Duchess (10770 Vol. 32.) so I could get started with the registered horses, then I purchased a registered colt from John Cottle, Wairepo Chief (4908 Vol.33). These started my registered Clydesdales and stud, with the first being Taugatara Charm (11069 Vol.34), born 1987, who is the great grandmother and grandmother to all my present horses and has continued to breed, work and show ever since.\\ "In 1996, I put fatherís last horse down; he was a solid gelding called Nugget who always worked with his head held high and his ears pricked forward. An amazing worker - he was 29 years old. It was a sad day, the end of my fatherís era, really. Never the less, I will continue to work horses as long as I can, so for me, the era lives on in 4 generations and itís great just to think of it, in that way. \\Stephen \Takapau, Central Hawkes Bay\New Zealand\Age 50 years, 2010
